Yesterday, at a press conference in Maastricht, Ryanair CEO O'Leary stated that KRO broadcaster had not, or insufficiently, observed the principle of hearing both sides of the argument. This allegation is factually incorrect.
In a diptych on the Irish price fighter by Brandpunt Reporter, four Ryanair pilots discussed the culture of fear at the company. The whistleblowers said that they often have to fly with less fuel than they want. "Pilots are being pressured into taking in as little fuel as they can to save money for the company", one of them stated. "We are constantly seeking the edges, including those of regulations", said his colleague. "Does that affect safety? Yes, it does", another added.
Brandpunt Reporter filed requests for interviews with Ryanair from two weeks prior to the first broadcast on 28 December. The requests were not honoured. Eventually, the makers submitted their findings to the airline company by email. Ryanair's written responses were quoted in both broadcasts. Moreover, the full texts were posted on the website. Just as the complete email correspondence between the editorial staff and Ryanair.
In addition, KRO repeatedly offered Ryanair to react in a Brandpunt episode following the two Reporter documentaries. This request has now been complied with. The interview that anchor Sven Kockelmann had with the Ryanair CEO will be broadcast on Nederland 2 on Sunday, 20 January, at 10.15 p.m.
In his press conference in Maastricht O'Leary announced that Ryanair would take legal action against KRO. He did not specify that action. To date, no concrete steps have been taken. KRO is confident about a possible lawsuit. Brandpunt Reporter has based its two episodes on Ryanair on a thorough investigation and acted with due care, as it always does.
